Pride Should go Before a Fall to Succeed in Business
By Dave McMahon
It has often been said that pride should go before a fall and yet many times we would rather fall on our own sword. Are you falling on your sword rather than using a simple solution to sell more?
Interesting question right?
Well, I was talking to a potential client on Monday who was complaining about the failure of their advertising campaign and they were blaming the staff and themselves for wasting all the money. As John kept talking about the failure I was reminded about the story of “Men Not Asking For Directions”…
The wife was sitting in the car thinking about fresh seafood and a relaxing evening sitting at a table overlooking the beach, with the wind blowing in her hair. Sounds like the perfect evening. It would be, if he (husband) could find the restaurant! Instead of ordering appetizers and watching the sun set on the beach, she was stuck in a car with the husband who was completely lost and driving aimlessly around trying to find the best seafood restaurant in town. She gazed out of the window at the throngs of people walking up and down the street, thinking to herself that all that needs to happen is for him to simply pull over and ask for directions. Sounds simple enough, right? Of course, if you are a woman, you may very well have found yourself in just this type of situation.
And as a man myself I will never publicity say I have done this… and no you can not ask my wife!
But, that’s the thing; when it comes to getting the right advertising and sales and marketing results fast, the key is to just stop and ask for directions!
Far too often; however, I see many people like John who continue to drive around aimlessly thinking that they can find the way on their own and in the process they end up wasting more time and resources than if they had just pulled over and asked for directions in the first place!
We do this not only when looking for the best restaurant in town, but also in business as well. The only difference is that in business, there is often much more on the line than simply enjoying a relaxing seafood dinner on the beach. Not only do we stand to waste time and resources but we also often waste money and opportunities when we refuse to ask for help. Think of how much we could get accomplished in the amount of time that we spend ‘driving around in circles’!
If you want to get ahead of the crowd and stop wasting time and resources, the solution is actually quite simple. You just need to pull over on and look for help from the right the people. It’s a simple enough technique, but far too often we do the same thing as the driver in our story and we procrastinate, putting off asking for help, and trudge on ahead on our own, thinking that surely we will come across whatever we are looking for sooner or later.
So if you have put off hiring that copywriter or sales person, or thought about doing a sales and marketing course, then now is the time to do it. If you can not pay to get help start now by reading, there is a library just around the comer from most of you filled with sales and marketing books you can access for free.

Unfortunately, it is often later and in the process we waste a lot of time, resources and opportunities! Wouldn’t it be much simpler, if we just pulled over and asked for directions? The old saying that pride should go before a fall sometimes really is true. This is one instance where that old saying certainly proves itself to be accurate and valuable. Once you start you will be surprised at how fast you can get back on track and simply because you were willing to stop and ask for directions or help.
