HUMBUG: The Art of Outrageous Publicity

I just watched a powerful little DVD from Joe Vitale called ‘HUMBUG: The Art of Outrageous Publicity’ (available from Amazon). It reveals the inside story of a prank Joe pulled on the US lottery and how they paid a guy to pretend he’d won. The prank was outrageous and it fooled the US media for a full 24 hours before the real winners came forward and claimed the prize.

The whole point of the exercise was to get free publicity for Joe’s book The Attractor Factor’ and it worked like gangbusters… getting nation wide coverage across the US.

Now I’m not telling you to go out there and become a hoaxer. That’s not what I’m getting at here. But the lesson is important. You’ve got to be a self-promoter, someone who excites interest from the marketplace. Or as Dan Kennedy puts it: You’ve got to…

… be known for something special, unique and just plain interesting and news worthy. Be yourself, but larger than life! Exaggerate and embellish your story. Basically you have to…

Create Excitement!

Create a buzz around you and your business. Because it’s not about being the best butcher or baker… but being known as the best butcher or baker … that’s what matters. You could be the second best butcher in town for all I care, but if the marketplace says you are the best, then damn it, you ARE the best.

Can you see that?

And here’s another BIGGIE. Who you are associated with adds to your reputation. That’s why celebrity endorsements are so powerful, and getting a celebrity to back your product or service is more affordable than you think.

Why does this work so well?

Because people crave entertainment. And they won’t tolerate boredom for even a second. As sales people and marketers, we must understand most people lead lives that are fairly boring. Nothing much happens from day to day … their existence is predictable. It’s sad, but true. And that’s why entertainment, such as movies, can bring in so much cash. People are starving to be entertained! They’re quietly begging to be amused!

Plus, here’s what’s important…

People are always on the lookout
for something better than they’ve got!

Savvy sales people and marketers use the power of intrigue, of curiosity … but more than that, they use the old “the grass is greener over here” technique to drive you wild with desire. It’s like it’s one big party over here so don’t miss out!

Remember, most people don’t get to meet interesting people. They don’t get to see far-off lands and do interesting things. In a word, many people’s lives are BORING.

And that’s a golden opportunity for the savvy sales person or marketer to use. You see, no matter what you sell, you’ve got to create a sense of wonder about your product or service. Offer your prospects an opportunity, an opportunity to get a taste of “greener pastures.” Give them excitement, give them entertainment! Create your story and never be boring!
