Getting The BIG IDEA
Getting the BIG idea is the most important thing… the details come later. The big idea might be what angle you’re going to take in your sales letter. It could be what you are going to sell next to your customers. It could be how you are going to implement a system that increases the size of each transaction a customer has with your business. Whatever the next big idea is, the most important thing is you got it, and now you’ve got to do something with it.
Just don’t fret about the details. The details come later while you’re implementing the idea. You see, what happens most times is you get a brilliant idea…. you get excited and then after a while something strange happens. You begin to get doubts. You start to see the work involved. You realise there are certain things you’ve got to figure out before going ahead. In short, there are a lot of DETAILS that have to be covered.
My advice? Forget the damn details! Don’t focus on what you don’t know or what gaps you have to fill. Just get on with the idea. And here’s a BIG TIP: Put a deadline on the implementation of your idea. It’s amazing what happens when you set a deadline on a project. The details seem to get filled in the closer the deadline gets. Obstacles are smashed as the deadline day approaches. It seems the whole world is on your side as the deadline day gets closer.
Sure it gets confusing sometimes… success is messy. There’ll be unforseen stuff that’s going to happen. Obstacles that crop up that have to be dealt with. Just deal with it. Deal with every situation as it happens. Don’t get snow-under with all the details so you’re incapable of moving. Hell, just start moving. The most important thing is getting the idea and getting started. Just dive in and start swimming… details come later. A key secret to your success is implementation.
To quote Dan Kennedy, from his book: No B.S. Business Success: “The willingness to do whatever it takes is infinitely more important than knowing everything there is to know about how to do it.”
Do It Now!
This means when you get The BIG Idea, just do it now. Get the job done. I know of clients who have stuffed around for years trying to get their product together. They’ve always got to add just one more thing. Or the client who takes months to write a sales letter. Aching over every line… polishing it until it shines.
My advice is to forget all that! Just do it now. Understand this: A “B Grade” letter in the mail is better than an “A Grade” letter that never gets posted. You don’t get paid by being “nearly there.”
I remember a few years back I got a new idea for a product and I raced through the sales letter in a blinding flash of energy. One big letter churned out in two days of intense writing… 28-pages of emotionally charged copy. And guess what? My printer counted a dozen spelling mistakes in the damn thing. He then told me this after he had them printed.
Was I worried? Not really. Yeah it might be nice to finally have a sales letter one day that doesn’t contain any spelling mistakes (or a newsletter for that matter). But I ain’t holding my breath. The most important thing was the letter got mailed and I got paid. You see, three days later I was taking orders. If I sweated over all the damn mistakes it still wouldn’t have been mailed… and I would be without all those orders. So don’t let perfection cloud your judgement. We’re human, we ain’t perfect…and the important thing is to get it done… some times good enough is good enough.
Many Ways To Be Right!
In the real world of commerce, there are many ways to be right… many answers to the same question. (See my Idea Magic manual for more on this.)
And there are many sure-fire ways to ensure that you get ideas for your business. And I’ll be touching on this in future articles. Just understand to be in business means change. You’ve got to be constantly re-inventing yourself… coming up with new ideas and testing them in your market place. Being an entrepreneur is not about being complacent. It’s not about being reactive either. It’s about being proactive, taking charge, being on the look-out for opportunities and then being quick to implement… one idea after another.
Or to paraphrase Dan Kennedy it’s not about doing things sequentially it’s about doing things simultaneously.
